Welcome

Dear Member

Firstly, welcome to the HASSRA Leeds Golf Society which is starting its 16th season.

I enjoyed my first year as Captain immensely and am really looking forward to my second year, especially as we in the society will be responsible for hosting

the National Golf Championships for HASSRA Yorkshire and the Humber in August.  We will need your help to make it a successful event.  We have a lot to live up to because

when we hosted this event previously we scored 4.8 out of 5 in the evaluation from the competitors.

This year we will have less money with which to subsidise events but, in planning the programme for 2010, we have tried to keep the costs of courses under review so that we

can continue to offer as much value for money as possible.

As the season progresses, you will receive the regular call up papers for outings from Nick Streets, our Secretary.  A week before the outing, you will receive the draw

with the club’s address.

Coffee is usually served in the Golf Club lounge, where members can meet, collect scorecards, and check the draw.  Should there be a combination to gain entrance to the

clubhouse, please ask the professional.

If you are playing in a society event for the first time, when you arrive please ask for Nick, myself or my Vice-Captain, Mike Newton, and we will do all we can to welcome

you to the society and make your day enjoyable.  Nick will have arranged for you to play with one of our long-standing members.

Should you have any queries, please contact Nick on Nick.Streets@btinternet.com or 07772 639624

I hope we all have an excellent golfing 2010.

Most of all we hope you enjoy the new season.

Best Wishes

Phil

March

18 Holes only                Selby

Monday 22nd March

Selby Golf Club is located near to the village of Brayton, close to the A19, and about three miles to the South West of Selby. The club was established in 1907, and is owned by its members, operating as a non-profit making limited company.

The course is an 18 hole par 71 'links-style' built on sandy soil, which gives the benefit of good drainage. In November 1998 there was a fairway irrigation system installed, and this, combined with the sandy soil means that the course should be in good condition in both summer and winter

APRIL

Spring Trophy                     West Bradford

Wednesday 14th April

West Bradford is a private members club situated some 3 miles northwest of Bradford city centre off the B6144 Haworth Road.
Originally founded by a group of Bradford wool men in 1900 as a 9 hole course on 80 acres of land leased from Bradford Corporation it was extended to 18 holes some seven years later. The layout of the course has been radically changed several times during the intervening years but the present layout has largely remained unaltered for the past 35 years. The freehold of the clubhouse and all associated buildings along with the 80 acres of course was purchased by the members in April 2008, thereby securing the long term future of the club.

With a par of 69 and a standard scratch of 68, West Bradford provides a good test over 18 holes for golfers of all abilities. The terrain is undulating although not physically too demanding but the golfer has to contend with the "out of bounds" on the perimeter of the course, the trees now lining many of the fairways and the prevailing westerly breezes.
All in all a visit to West Bradford should provide the visitor with a testing but pleasurable day out, the proof of which is borne out by the numbers who return year after year.

 MAY

Weekend Away                           Forest Pines
Sunday 2nd & Monday 3rd May
At Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort, the magnificent 27-hole golf course meanders through majestic pines and into open heathland, offering three fabulous loops of nine holes. But don't be fooled by its looks, it's as challenging as it's beautiful.

One of the country's premier golf venues, it offers over 10,000 yards of Championship golf. Whatever level you play at, our course offers a good day. It's hosted the Junior golf championships, the PGA Super 60s and the Euro Pro Qualifier events for the future names in golf. The hole to test your metal is the 7th water hole – we've fished 6000 balls out of the water in one year! But the lucky hole is definitely the first. It's in the Guinness Book of records as the scene of the very first hole in one.

NSPCC Putter    -                 Brough
Thursday 20th May

July

FYLDE Match                       Bingley St Ives
Friday 2nd July
Bingley St Ives Golf Club is situated within the St Ives Estate the historic home of the Ferrand family. The estate, which was bequeathed to the town of Bingley by the Ferrands for use as parkland for the community, was used in the Civil War by the Parliamentary forces of General Fairfax, whose entrenchment can still be traced across the moor below the 14th fairway.

The club was formed in 1931 as a municipal club under the auspices of Bingley Urban District Council. Initially it was a nine-hole layout which was expanded to 18 holes in 1934. Today it forms a 18-hole championship test which ranks among the best in Yorkshire. Dr Alistair Mackenzie, one of the acknowledged greats of golf course design - the creator, with Bobby Jones, of Augusta National - was among those involved in the early lay-out.

In 1990 the club was privatised, the members forming a limited company, agreeing a long-term lease with the City of Bradford Metropolitan Council and laying the groundwork for the building of the clubhouse. The new clubhouse was completed in 1994 and its design reflects the character of the estate buildings, borrowing from the pillars of the mansion and the arches of the surrounding buildings.

Bingley St. Ives golf course is unusual in that it is a single loop, taking the golfers from parkland to woodlands to moorland and back again with stunning views along the Aire Valley to Leeds, Bradford and beyond in the south and east, the magnificent Bronte moorlands to the west and the imposing Rombolds Moor - ' the Ilkla' Moor of Yorkshire's anthem - to the north.

Captain’s Day                       Woodsome Hall
Friday 23rd July
Situated to the south of Huddersfield, Woodsome Hall provides traditional quality to its members and visitors alike. Designed by James Braid, who also created Carnoustie, Gleneagles and Dalmahoy, its 14th century Club House is stunning. Described as "a hidden gem" by Peter Alliss, a day at Woodsome will provide one of the finest golfing experiences in Yorkshire

Close to both the M1 and M62, the course has testing par 3's, narrow fairways and well-manicured greens. Measuring 5850 off yellows , 6100 off whites, and over 70 bunkers.

Woodsome Hall Golf Club's traditional golfing values, blended with fine hospitality, provides an unforgettable experience. Do not miss fine dining in the great hall, good wine and cask beers.

Thursday 14th October

Established in 1905 Woodhall Hills Golf Club is situated in West Yorkshire, between Leeds and Bradford, near the small village of Calverley. The course now stands in over 130 acres of land and affords wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.

Over the years the undulating parkland course has undergone a number of improvements and can now be considered one of the most challenging courses in the area. You will encounter tree lined fairways, water hazards, challenging fairways and difficult par threes, all of which combine to provide an interesting challenge for any golfer!

November
C vs P Challenge                Silkstone

Wednesday 17th November

The club moved to its present site at Field Head in 1905. The site at Silkstone was no doubt chosen for its tremendous views in some of the most delightful countryside in this charming corner of Yorkshire but also because of its close proximity to Dodworth railway station which linked it with Barnsley.

The nine-hole course opened in 1905 and was extended to eighteen holes in 1917. The club had used a farm building as a clubhouse until 1927. It was in that year that a new clubhouse was built and the wooden structure of that original building still forms the interior of the present premises. There have been many improvements and extensions over the years. The dining hall and kitchen was built in 1971.The gentlemen’s locker room and professional’s shop was added in 1975 and in 1979 the frontage of the clubhouse was reconstructed increasing the size of the main lounge. In 1992 the original steward’s accommodation was demolished and a new one built.

In 1968 the club purchased the land at a cost of £10,000 and the name of the club was changed to Silkstone Golf Club. In 1973 additional land was purchased to lengthen the course. The club bought land for the practice ground in 1990.

The course was greatly improved by the opening of seven new holes on forty acres of newly purchased land in May 2008.

December

Secretary’s Chalice            -     Moortown

Friday 17th December

Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country’s finest Championship Golf Courses.  Originally designed by Dr Alistair MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 125 acres of dramatically contrasting mainly level woodland and moorland.

From the opening par 5 there are manu fine holes to enjoy including the new 6th, rated the most difficult, and the famous Gibraltar par 3 10th with its sloping plateau green; the Club’s signature hole.

Typical of all great courses there is a classic finish.  With its fairway favouring strategically placed bunkers, the 18th requires two exceptional shots to find the well-guarded green which nestles under the clubhouse windows.

The Society Handicapping System

All members should be allocated a Society Handicap for use on Society outings, or in friendly competitions or matches.

The maximum handicap for a man is 28, for a lady 36.  (New entrants start with 24 and 32 respectively)

(Should you not play for 12 calendar months your handicap will be revised to reflect your club handicap when you next play)

A player's handicap shall be increased only when he/she scores less than 30 points in any 18 hole Society competition, by

     1/3rd  of  1 stroke if their handicap is between 0 – 10.4

     2/3rds of 1 stroke if their handicap is between 10.5 – 20.4

1 stroke if their handicap is 20.5 or above

A player's handicap shall be reduced in the same way as highlighted above multiplied by the number of stableford points over 36, up

 to a maximum of 5 (ie. 5 x 1/3rd , 5 x 2/3rds, etc), in any 18 hole Society competition.

For example: if playing off 6 and you score 39 points then you will lose 1/3rd x 3 equalling a cut of 1 stroke.  In the same circumstances

for someone off 28, you will lose 3 strokes, etc.

Handicaps will be rounded down if 1/3rd over and up if 2/3rds over.

A player's Home Club handicap will take priority in formal/representative competitions or matches.

No judgement is made in respect of the ease or otherwise of the playing conditions on the particular day upon which handicaps are altered.

The Society AGM has approved the rules and the committee monitors them.

Etiquette

Please find below Society guidelines to aid our smooth progress around the courses we play.

PLEASE BE ON THE TEE five minutes before your appointed time and be ready for play.

PLEASE WALK TO YOUR BALL, IF SAFE TO DO SO, while your partners are preparing to play theirs.

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR BAG ON THE SIDE OF THE GREEN THAT LEADS TO THE NEXT TEE.

PLEASE MOVE SWIFTLY FROM THE GREEN WHEN FINISHED AND MARK CARDS ON THE NEXT TEE.

PLEASE BE AWARE WHICH OF YOUR GROUP HAS WON THE HOLE AND WILL TEE OFF FIRST ON THE NEXT.  That person should tee-off, where possible, and

THEN mark the card for the previous hole.   When teeing off on a blind driving hole, MEMBERS SHOULD BE AS SURE AS POSSIBLE that the group ahead are out of range.

PLEASE BE QUIET when players are taking a shot, but particularly around the tee and green.

YOU SHOULD always try to KEEP UP WITH the match in front, NOT JUST IN FRONT of the match behind.  If you fall more than a hole behind the group in front, and you

are delaying the group behind, you must let the following match play through.  This will speed up play and remove stress.

IF YOU HAVE LOST YOUR BALL and the group following you is on the tee, you must wave them through.  You should also remember that you have 5 minutes only to find a lost

ball and then you should move on.

If a wayward tee shot might not be found, PLEASE PLAY A PROVISIONAL BALL.

MEN MUST PICK UP THE BALL if not on the green in 8 shots and are losing ground on the group in front.

LADIES MUST PICK UP if not on the green in 9 shots and are losing ground on the group in front.

PLUS

ALWAYS – stand well clear on the tee    ALWAYS – remember to replace your divots

ALWAYS – mark your ball properly NEVER – throw equipment or clubs

NEVER – walk across a player’s line        ALWAYS – rake the sand after a bunker shot

ALWAYS – repair your pitchmarks NEVER – yank the flag out sideways

NEVER – stand directly behind a player on the putting green

ALWAYS – shout “fore” to warn other golfers of danger

The Golf Society Leagues

The Society operates two Leagues in addition to its regular outings and their trophies.

The rules are that:

There are two leagues; RABBITS AND TIGERS

These would be determined based on an equal split of members with a society handicap at the start of the season and members

will remain in that league for the season irrespective of handicap movements.  The Tigers League will have members with a handicap

 of no higher than 19.

All events will count in the leagues except those in November & December and the inter-regional matches.

To qualify members must have played at least 4 outings, including 1 “major”, and members’ top 4 scores count.  Leagues will be won

on the basis of total stableford points won.

The “majors” will now be played from the same handicap level.

Countback will be based on the “major” score

Presentations will be made at our Christmas outing.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR 2010

Over the last couple of years, the Golf Society committee has noted a steady decline in the number of members participating in the pre-arranged Development Programme events held at Leeds Golf Centre.  The numbers have declined to such an extent that the majority of events have had to be cancelled.  At the same time, the 50% subsidy for private lessons arranged by members themselves has proved very popular.

So for 2009, HASSRA Leeds Golf Society has decided to concentrate on private golf lessons, arranged with a golf professional of your choice.  We will subsidise your lessons by 50%, up to a maximum of £75 per member per year.  So, for example, if you book a course of lessons costing £150 in total, you will receive £75 back.

If you are interested in taking up this offer, but don’t have a particular professional or golf club in mind, HASSRA Leeds Golf Society has obtained details of the lessons/courses available at some of the golf clubs in the Leeds area.

Most golf clubs offer individual lessons, lessons in pairs and group lessons.  Individual lessons are always the most expensive, so it may be worthwhile contacting the club professional to check whether they have any places available on their group lessons.  Alternatively, if you know somebody that may be interested in pairing up, it may be worthwhile booking together and having lessons in pairs.

You must be a member of HASSRA Leeds and the Golf Society to take advantage of this offer.

GOLF SOCIETY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2010

GOLF CLUBS

The Golf Society has some spare sets of golf clubs, which we will lend to newcomers until you decide if you want to take up the game.  So if you are thinking of having some lessons but don’t want to invest a lot of money up front or make do with a battered hire set, get in touch with me.  We have one man’s and one lady’s full set of clubs with putters, golf bags and pull trolleys.  We can also split the sets to allow more people to use them if necessary. The loan will be under the following terms:-

There is no charge for the loan of the clubs but there will be a deposit of £20 in the form of a cheque, which will be held un-cashed for the duration of the loan and returned to you on return of the clubs, in a satisfactory condition, ie no damage other than normal wear and tear.

The duration of the loan should not normally exceed two months.

You will be responsible for the safe-keeping of the clubs when in your possession and the Golf Society will not be liable for any injury, loss or damage to any third party.

Only members of HASSRA Leeds and the Golf Society are eligible for the loan.  Priority for loan will be given to people taking part in the Golf Society’s development programme for new players.

Please note: You will still need to buy appropriate golf shoes for playing on a golf course (not usually required for lessons) and other consumables like balls, tees etc.
